Shot by hunters seeking revenge for the assassination of the new Emperor, William is on the brink of death. There is only one plan to save him: hand him to the Vitulan army.

Terrowin believes imperial field surgeons will save William's life, if only so he can be taken to the capital, where a public execution surely awaits. Whether William can be rescued before he is hanged is another matter, but that’s a problem for tomorrow.
